The Age-Length Key Window is designed with two sections; Section 1
contains two spreadsheet for input data and Section 2 is the area that displays the age-length key output,
both are navigable by tabs. Files used in this portion of FishBC is .ali = age
length key input and .alk = age length key output. The .ali
file will contain your sample number, age, and length
measurements. The .alk file will contain your age-length key
and the output of using your age length key with the length data
provided.
To create an age-length key you need a sample number, age, and
length. To apply your age-length key to a length frequency
you just need individual lengths. Keep in mind if you are
creating and using an age-length key on the same data set, all
individual lengths need to be entered in the length-frequency
sheet even the length from the aged fish. |

Your age-length key will be created based on length increments
you specify. We have included 5 length categories; 0.5 in,
1.0 in, 10 mm, 100 mm, and 250 mm. For the default
increment the minimum value is 0 and the maximum value is
determined by your largest fish. If you would like to
specify a different length increment you can also select "User
Defined", where you will need to specify a minimum, maximum, and
increment value.
When applying the age-length key the average length at age and
variance are calculated based on the midpoint of the length
class. For example the 20-30 mm length class would use 25
mm to generate the average length for that length class. |
